Moving in
The move itself can be hard work, and there is a lot to organise. You will need to book a removal firm in advance, once you know the completion date.

If you can afford it it is probably a good idea to let the removal firm pack your things, as they will have had a lot of practice at doing it quickly, but even so, you should allow your self plenty of time to sort out your things and decide what is going where.

Try to label as many boxes and crates as you can with what is inside them and which room they will be going into in your new home. Remember to leave some important things where you can get at them easily when you first unpack - such as the kettle and tea or coffee.

Before you move it is a good idea to contact the companies that supply your gas, electricity and water, as well as the phone company to let them know you are moving and make arrangements to read the meters, in both your old and new homes. You should find phone numbers to contact them on the backs of their bills. You might also find this a sensible and convenient time to change suppliers. Check out our brilliant gas and electricity prices tool to make sure you are getting the cheapest deal available - just type in your new postcode and go. Check now.

You may also want to ask the Post Office to redirect your mail for a while to make sure that you have told everyone you need to.

Once you are in, with all your boxes and furniture around you, you need to do the most important thing of all - put the kettle on and settle down with your feet up to enjoy a cup of tea. You deserve it.

And finally, one tip is fairly early in the proceedings on the day you move in is to try to make the beds up, so that when you are exhausted with all the unpacking all you simply have to do is fall in to bed.

To make sure moving is as smooth as possible why not use our moving home checklist. So you can keep an eye on where you are in the whole process.
